What makes a GREAT Reality TV Star & If it's right for YOU.

I have been representing in Reality Television, otherwise known as Alternative TV for over 12 years. I remember a time where it was taboo to represent a Reality TV Star. Many of my colleagues found it to be distasteful and/or not lucrative… boy have the times changed. Unscripted Television has dominated the television market and there are diamonds being created from these shows across all networks. You just simply cannot escape Reality TV.

I want to preface the email by stating that I am a true thespian. I studied acting throughout my childhood and there is no way that scripted representation will ever leave my business model. But like many businesses, we must adapt and I’m proud to say I’ve had a head start on that journey: Finding the right Reality TV Stars.

I’ve worked with talent across many networks - from Bad Girls Club, to America’s Next Top Model, Big Brother, you name it. All shows are different. Some shows have such great exposure with an amazing in-house PR team. Some shows you just wish never happened. I’ve been blessed to find some great Reality TV stars and this is how you know if you’re right for Reality TV.

#1: THE REALITY STAR KNOWS HOW TO KEEP IT REAL.

When I started representing in Reality TV, it was still finding it’s footing. There was no blueprint for great television. You just found very entertaining people who lived without any regrets in front of a camera. Now, you have to decipher between who is playing a character, and who is being real. The key to a successful reality star is just that: Someone real, someone funny, someone that lives without regret on-camera. They’re not trying to be the loudest, nor are they looking for a bang with a physical altercation. They’re authentically being themselves as if a camera is not there. Think: Real World in the early days.

#2: THE REALITY STAR THAT UNDERSTANDS THIS IS A BUSINESS.

After doing the show, the talent understands that it’s the time to capitalize. The main purpose of Reality TV for many is usually to propel into a career in acting, or seek further business from their time on the show. It’s like an infomercial. The perfect Reality TV star understands that. Wether you’re great at public speaking, trying to create a clothing line - or just want to get on more shows. They are not waiting until the show airs, they’re working beforehand to make sure they maximize their audience - which then entices agents and managers.

#3: THE REALITY STAR CAPTIALIZES THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA

They’re actively promoting their shows while promoting their brand and product. Nothing makes a great Reality TV star than an active one. When you sign onto reality TV - you have a job and that’s to promote the show you are on. It’s very easy to get lost in the popularity of your show. You have to make it a 50/50 give and take. You give the promotion to the show while also promoting what you’re doing. And if you’re not doing anything - see #2.

IS reality tv right for me?

I always tell aspiring Reality TV stars - don’t do it if you have anything to hide. In today’s current climate, it can be beneficial if you’re just looking to propel your name and build your business and career. I’ve had some of my Reality TV stars transition into successful careers in social media, influencing brands, and even acting. Now for the latter: Keep in mind that Reality TV is still very much taboo to the scripted world. Just because you did a hit show like The Circle on Netflix does not mean Ryan Murphy is going to come knocking on your door with a lead role. It just means you did a Reality TV show that has (hopefully) garnered you a following. So if you’re just looking for some fun, find yourself entertaining, and want to grow a fan base - do it. Just try not to embarass yourself.
